To establish your presence on the internet, you need a domain name. This is simply the name you assign to your website and which you must register at a domain registrar. The choice of domain name is as important as hosting as this will sometimes determine your placement with the search engines.
- Domain name extension - We have .com, .gov, .info, .net, .edu, .fm, .tv etc. The most popular is .com which stands for commerce, for example www.yourname.com.

You can use any extension for the search engines but choose a .com extension if you are building a business website
- Keyword - Try to include your keyword in your domain name for search engine optimisation for instance, if your site is about gardening, you couls use www.gardening.com or www.online-gardening.com
- Short names - Avoid using long names. A short name is easy to remember, for instance www.mangoes.com is easier to remember than www.coolmangoesfromthetropics.com.
- It is a good idea not to register your domain name with your web host. This makes domain tranfers less cumbersome.
- Relevance - Your domain name should be relevant to your site's topic.
Typically you cannot register a name that's been taken already. Finding out first if a particular domain name is available by doing a basic search.
