Import a file or folder

When you import a file or a folder from your local file system, your corporate intranet, or the World Wide Web, Microsoft FrontPage places a copy of the file or folder in your web. You can import any type of file that your operating system supports. You can also create a list of files or folders to import at another time, and change the URLs of files before you import them.

Note   To import a file or folder into a specific subfolder in your web, select that folder in the Folder List before using this procedure.

  1. On the File menu, click Import.
  2. Select the files or folders you want to import:
  3. To import files, click Add File, and then in the Add File to Import List dialog box, point to the folder where the files you want to import are stored. Select the files, and then click Open.

Note    To change the URL of any file before importing it (either to rename it or to change the file's folder in your web), click Modify. In the File location within your web box, type a URL relative to the root of the current web. For example, if you type the URL folder2/sample.htm, the page will be saved in Folder2 below the root folder of the current web. After changing the URL, click OK.

  4. To import a folder, click Add Folder, and then in the Browse for Folder dialog box, locate and select the folder, and then click OK.
  5. To import a file or folder from a Web site, click From Web, and then respond to the Import Web wizard.
  6. To add files from other folders, more folders, or files from other Web sites to the Import list, repeat this procedure beginning at step 3.
  7. To save the import list, and import the files and folders at a later time, click Close. To start importing the files to the selected folder (if any) in the current web, click OK.

Export a file or folder

The easiest way to export a file or folder is to right-click it in the Folder List, click Copy, and then paste the file or folder into Windows Explorer or another application.

  • To export a file or folder under a different name, click Save As on the File menu, and then type the new name in the File name box.
  • To export a file or folder under a different path, to a different web, or to a network location, click Save As on the File menu, and then in the Save in box, navigate to the appropriate path, server, or network location.
  • To export a file as a different type (for example, to export an HTML page (.htm extension) as a template in FrontPage (.tem extension) or Active Server page (.asp extension)), click Save As on the File menu, and then in the Save as type list, click that file type.
  • To export files or a web to another server or network location, select the pages or open the web that you want to export, and then click Publish on the File menu. Respond to the Publish Web wizard to export the selected files or web by publishing them.

Note   If you export files or a web by publishing them, Microsoft FrontPage automatically repairs any hyperlinks between files in the same web or subweb.

Move a file or folder

The easiest way to move a file or folder is to right-click it in the Folder List, click Cut, right-click the destination in the Folder List or in Windows Explorer, and then click Paste. If you paste the file or folder into another web or subweb, Microsoft FrontPage automatically repairs hyperlinks between the pages within the folder.

Rename a file or folder

When you rename a file or folder in a web using this procedure, Microsoft FrontPage automatically repairs any hyperlinks to or from the renamed file (or files in the renamed folder).

  1. In the Folder List, right-click the file or folder you want to rename, and then click Rename on the shortcut menu.
  2. Type a new name for the file or folder.

Notes

  • When renaming a file, be careful not to change or omit the file extension unintentionally (for example, from Index.htm to Index.asp). Changing or omitting the extension of a file might render the file unusable.
  • If you rename a file or folder using Windows Explorer, hyperlinks to and from that file (or files in that folder) will not be repaired automatically. You should always use the procedure above when renaming files or folders in a web.

Import graphics to a web

Import pictures and videos to a web so that you can quickly access the files you need. For instance, you can add pictures to your web, one by one, by adding each picture to a page and then saving the page. However, if you know that you will be using a certain group of pictures, you can import them all at once into a folder you specify in your web. Then, when you want to add a picture to a page, you can access it quickly without having to look for it in the file system.

  1. In Windows Explorer, select the graphics you want to import.

Tip   You can select a list of files by clicking the first file, and then while pressing SHIFT, click the last file in the list. Or, to select individual files, press and hold CTRL, then click the files.

  2. Right-click the selected files, and then click Copy on the shortcut menu.
  3. Switch to Microsoft FrontPage.
  4. In Folders view, open the folder into which you want to import the graphics.
  5. Right-click in the Contents pane, and then click Paste on the shortcut menu.

Tip   You can also import graphics by clicking and dragging the files (for example, from your desktop) into the Folder List or Contents pane in FrontPage.
